fn 509 vs glock 19

Fn 509 Vs Glock 19 - The Glock 19 Gen 5 is a great pistol, which is one of the reasons it was a best seller of 2020. The FN 509 is also an excellent polymer frame pistol made by FN Herstal, one of the leading companies in the industry. While the Glock 19 is the standard choice for self-defense pistols, the 509 is often overlooked. To find out why we compared the two for concealed carry and personal defense.

A stainless steel socket with standard front and rear vertical serrations facilitates slide handling and slide control. One thing I appreciate about all hands is the ability to manipulate the slide with one hand. The Glock 19 sight has a short arm that allows for one-handed manipulation.

The Glock 19 comes with three 15-round magazines. A nice addition for those who like to carry two extra mags. Another nice feature is the cutout in the rear of the magazine, which allows for the removal of a jammed magazine. The mag well is also nicely flared to help with smooth mag changes.

The polymer frame is standard Glock and the pistol comes with two regular backstraps that do not have a beaver. Then there are the two beaver tail backstraps that also come with the shotgun. This ensures that no matter which style you prefer, you get the right grip configuration. The grip texture is standard Glock, although it feels adequate, a more aggressive texture would be helpful.

The controls are well placed with a tray release for easy handling. I had to loosen my fire grip a bit to drop the magazine, but it fired clean and fast. The magazine release is not ambidextrous, but can be switched from left to right for lefties. The sliding cap is inconspicuous and easy to handle.

The Glock 19 trigger is well built with a trigger weight of around 4 to 5 pounds. Trigger sensitivity is good. When you pull the trigger, you push fully toward the "crushed" wall and then continue a short, crisp brake. What I really like about this trigger is the audible and tactile reset.

The front of the frame has an accessory rail that is clearly Picatinny based with a single slot. On review, the Surefire X300 Ultra, Inforce Wild 1 and Wild 2 fit in well.

Let's start with the FN 509, the slide has nice sharp and aggressive rifling on both the front and rear of the slide. It helps a lot in image manipulation and image review.

The sights are steel with a luminescent dot in the front and dovetail sights in the rear. A nice feature of the front sight is the relatively aggressive arm, which helps handle the slide with one hand. The rear sight is a deep “U” and compared to the Glock 19 it took me a while to get used to.

The FN 509 comes with two 17-round magazines. The magazine release is flimsy and magazines fall out easily. There are two additional back straps to help it fit snugly in your hand. I really like the grip texture on the sides, it's aggressive without punishing the hand. The texture of the grip all around, including the frontstrap and backstrap, makes for a much more secure grip than the Glock 19. There is also a textured thumb and trigger groove to help achieve a higher grip and which helps with recoil mitigation.

The 509 also features an ambidextrous slide release that is well designed to release the slide without excessive effort. There is also a cover around the sliding cap, which helps prevent accidental manipulation.

The trigger pull is a good size to fit gloved hands. The trigger can be folded as a safety feature. The trigger pull is very crisp with a nice predictable stop before the actual release. Towing weight is reported to be between 5.5 and 7.7 pounds. The reset is also good, with an audible reset click. Up front is a large 1913 Picatinny rail that accepts multiple lights and lasers.

At first I thought I would like the FN 509's performance better than the Glock, but after putting them through their paces I realized I still prefer the Glock.

There are two reasons I think I prefer the Glock over the FN, they are the trigger and the sights. The Glock seems to have a lighter trigger, but I am also used to shooting Glock pistols. I am also using Glock sights with the Glock "U" rear sights versus the FN three white dot configuration. It made a difference.

Accuracy testing seems to prove this by getting the Glock group results with a "fist" or roughly 4-inch to 4.5-inch group versus the 7.5-inch group with the FN 509.

Combat testing also proved that my skill with the Glock was superior to the FN. It was shot from a distance of around 7-10 yards.

On the Glock 19, I really enjoyed how easily I could manipulate the controls, both the magazine release and the slide control. The 509 also had easy-to-manipulate controls, so they're bound to be there.

Both pistols offer decent sights out of the box, but the FN would probably get a nod if it had a luminescent front sight. Either way, if I have either of them, I'll probably replace both sets of sights.

I really liked the grip angle of the FN 509. It naturally helps me to reach the goal. The FN 509 has a grip angle of about 17-18 degrees, which makes aiming quite easy and natural. On the other hand, the Glock 19 is closer to 19-20 degrees, which I don't like as much.

As I mentioned earlier, grip adjustment is also a big plus for the 509. The FN welds to the hand better because of this grip texture. Finally, the 509 actually gets another big point for having an ambi magazine release that is tactile and easy to handle, making it easy to drop magazines.

The FN 509 is a fine defensive weapon with great grip, slide, and controls. While the FN 509 is a great defensive weapon, I shoot the Glock 19 better, so if I had to choose one, it would be the Glock. Either pistol would be an excellent defensive weapon, whether for concealed carry or home defense. Both enjoy shooting at the range, which means training will never be a burden.
