Fn Fnc Assault Rifle - The AK 5 assault rifle is an excellent example of how a standard weapon can be modified to suit a particular buyer's requirements, provided he buys enough of them. The AK 5 or Automatkarbin 5 ("automatic carbine 5", "automatic carbine" is the Swedish term for automatic rifle) was introduced in 1986, and is still used as Sweden's standard automatic rifle. The current version is the AK 5C, which also receives the Colt M203 grenade launcher.

In the mid-1970s, the Swedish Army began looking for a new battle rifle to replace its 7.62 mm weapon. Swedish firearms experts examined all available designs and narrowed down the options to the Israeli Galil or the Belgian FN FNC. A quantity of each was purchased and subjected to technical trials and long troops in 1979/80 and as a result the Galil was dropped and the FN FNC was selected to further develop the Swedes needed.

Their main concern was to have a gun that could withstand the harsh northern climate; extreme cold places unusual stress on a firearm, and handling weapons in cold conditions often requires modification. Several experiments took place, with changes to the prototype of the FN FNC design, until the Swedish Army was finally satisfied, and in 1985 the Carl Gustav AK 5 was finally approved for adoption.
The FN FNC was adopted by the Belgian Armed Forces in 1989, as a service-wide replacement for the 7.62×51mm NATO FN FAL, after being issued in small numbers to airborne infantry units for several years. It was called one of the best rifles ever made.
Changes to the original FNC do not affect the underlying mechanism; which remains the same gas operated rotary bolt type. But the three-round burst mechanism was removed, allowing only single shot or automatic fire at 650 rounds per minute.
The most notable changes are the reinforcing parts, such as the shock, bolt, extractor, handguard, gas block, cocking handle, selector switch and sling swivels. The cocking handle and trigger guard were enlarged so that they could be easily operated by men wearing heavy gloves, and the hand guard was enlarged in size for the same reason. Next, the designers modified the detachable box magazine to be interchangeable with the STANAG magazine for the M16 rifle.

The sight is simple two-position flip with apertures for a range of 250 and 400 meters, and hooded front sight to reduce reflections. Optical and electro-optic sights can of course be fitted. Surface finish for this type of gun; metal first sandblasted, then Parkerized and finally a layer of dark green enamel baked on.
It is the Swedish licensed production version of FN FNC. Along with the other variants, all have a cyclic rate of fire of around 650-700 rounds per minute (RPM). The variants produced so far are:

Meet the UN FNC - Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began almost four weeks ago, I have followed several social media sites dedicated to - the ground cover. One of my favorites is the Ukraine Weapons Tracker on Twitter. As a gun and tool guy, I found it interesting to see the weapons used by the Ukrainian forces. Recently they posted a photo of the International Legion using the FN FNC rifle that was recently sent to Belgium.
The Belgian government recently donated 3,000 assault rifles, although which rifles they donated at the time seemed unclear. Now it is clear that they have contributed a number of UN FNCs. The FN FNC is a Belgian pre-service rifle that has recently been replaced by the FN SCAR. Fabrique Nationale, or FN as many of us know them, is one of the world's leading arms manufacturers and they supply a wide range of arms to the US as well as to international markets.
Fnc 80: A Kalashnikov For The West?
The UN designed the FNC to be a modern 5.56 rifle that would replace the 7.62 NATO rifle commonly issued in Europe during the early years of the Cold War. FAL The UN ruled itself in all of Western Europe at the time and even earned the name "The Right Hand of the Free World" as a result. But NATO's move to standardize the 5.56 round across the alliance led to new rifle designs.
The FN previously attempted to produce a 5.56 caliber rifle in the FN CAL. CAL proved to be expensive, complicated and not as reliable as the UN wanted. So the design was shelved and the simpler and easier to manufacture FN FNC became the focus. The first country to fully adopt the new weapon is Indonesia.
Soon, Sweden adopted a modified version called the Ak5, and shortly after that, the Belgian military finally adopted their home country's rifle. The FNC serves to this day with the Belgian military.
The FN FNC uses a long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt similar to the AK design. In fact, it's almost the same, and that's a good thing. This is a proven design that works, especially in cold environments. Long stroke gas piston systems are simple and as a result are also a cheaper design for mass production. Not much, and usually works well.

FNC comes in two variants: Standard and Para. The difference between the two really comes down to barrel length. The standard rifle variant has a 17.7-inch barrel, and the carbine has a 14.3-inch barrel. Both guns have a folding disc with a tubular design that makes the gun compact and easy to store, as well as a less complicated internal carriage.
The 5.56 caliber rifle uses STANAG magazines that are compatible with standard M4/M16 magazines, although it is rumored that FNC magazines will ensure versatility. The gun uses a selective fire system that allows the user to switch between semi-automatic, burst fire and fully automatic fire.
Is the UN FNC a good choice for Ukraine and especially the Foreign Legion volunteers? First of all, from the ground to the gun is a good design. The FNC is a reliable, accurate and highly suitable weapon for a wide range of situations. It distinguishes itself by being a good combat rifle.
Second, long stroke gas piston systems work well in cold environments. Ukrainian and Russian winters are notoriously cold, and many weapons fail in this environment. The M16 series, the SA-80 family and many others can freeze in extreme winter conditions. When the gun goes from a cold to a warm environment, condensation tends to form, and when the gun is then exposed to cold again, condensation can freeze (and water expands when it freezes). Weapons that require very precise tolerances are more prone to damage or failure in these conditions, as the expansion of frozen moisture can wreak havoc in tight spaces.

The design of the FN FNC leaves a significant amount of room to prevent this and allows the weapon and operating system to be used in the extreme environment. As a 5.56 caliber rifle, however, there is a slight break from the standard Ukrainian forces. Ukraine has a large stockpile of Soviet-era AK-47s, but began switching to the WAC-47 a few years ago. Both weapons are chambered in 7.62x39 mm.
That's why it makes sense for Ukraine to equip the Foreign Legion fighters with weapons, especially with the influx of Swedish volunteers who are already familiar with the platform. The Ukrainian Foreign Legion can manage the logistics of its weapons instead of dumping them into the regular army procurement channel. It only makes sense for fighting forces to use the same rifle and round to simplify logistics.
It is much easier to send 5.56 ammo and magazines to foreign forces than to mix rifles and ammo between different units and then try to keep them all supplied with a combination of cartridges. Also, most volunteer troops seem to be more familiar with the operation of western rifles in 5.56 than the AK series platform. The FNC is not as popular as the M4, but represents a fairly western design.
FN FNC is a product of its time and design. This is an old gun, designed in the mid-1970s, and it shows. The pistol does not have an open bolt retention device, so when the weapon fires its last round, the user does not know until he pulls the trigger again and walks away.

Dropping optics isn't easy either, although the Ukrainian Foreign Legion doesn't seem to have any optics to issue. There is a general lack of modularity with the pistol series. It is not easy to attach accessories such as vertically held lights, lasers, etc.
Finally, it is a heavy gun, at nearly 10 pounds fully loaded. Weight is the infantry's enemy, and compared to other modern service weapons, this rifle is heavy. FN FNC has weight
